Hello internet friends!

The summer seems to be zipping by here on the west coast, the weather has been amazing and we’ve been doing a lot of camping and biking this year (the things you can do when you don’t have a wedding to plan!) in between I’ve been sewing up a summer storm of cute separates as well as dresses :D

Today I’m sharing one half of an outfit that I’ve worn at least 4 times in the month since I’ve made it, my pink Winslow culottes! The top of this outfit is a Willow tank that I’ve had for a few years now, it made it’s first appearance on the blog in a post about a new pair of ginger jeans. I reached for this willow tank in particular because the pink of the leaves pretty much exactly matches the pink of the culottes :D and I’ve been paring them together ever since!

I’ve never made the Winslow culottes before, however I do have another me Made culotte skirt in my wardrobe which has a pretty funny story….so I have this bad habit of not learning how to pronounce words because I tend to learn new words through reading and not necessarily through conversation and because of this I can sometimes make up how I think a word sounds and just run with it. With the word culottes I had never come across it before but from the description I realized it was kind of like a ‘skort’ (those half shorts half skirt things) but a more flow-y skirt version. Since skort was a mash up of skirt and shorts my brain decided that culottes must be a mash up of words too and for what ever reason my brain decided that the word contains a mash up of the word ‘pantaloons’ and so I pronounced culottes ‘cut-a-loons’. When I told a good friend of mine that ‘I had made a pair of ‘cut-a-loons’’ she looked at me like I had grown a third head! Once the mix up was cleared up I was, of course, teased but we’ve called them ‘cut-a-loons’ ever since!

The fabric for this pair of ‘cut-a-loons’ is a super breathable viscose linen Noil from Blackbird fabrics that I picked up a little while ago. The drape on this fabric is perfect for this pattern, nice and drape but enough weight so as not to go flying too much in the wind. I managed to squeeze out all of my pattern pieces in 1.5m of fabric, this is of course after compensating for shortness (I removed 2.5” from the shorts version)

Other than length the only other major modification I made to the pattern was to use the elastic waist band hack that Hellen posted on her blog instead of the invisible zip option that came with the pattern (because elastic waist always beats zipper waist!) I kind of wish I had also opted for the in slash pockets over the inseam ones as I find that the pockets kinda flap about while I walk. I’ll also probably end up shortening the pocket bag on this pair and future shorts versions as it peeks out below the hem if I put anything heavy, like my phone, in them.

I’m thinking I may make a pair of the full length palazzo pant version for that in between weather in the fall (although I don’t want to think about the fall just yet!) Are there any words that you thought were pronounced one way you were actually totally wrong? Let me know in the comments!
