Hi internet friends!
Today I wanted to give a short review of my #MeMadeMay2019 experience! This year was my 3rd year participating in this yearly challenge and I would say it best reflects my daily me made wardrobe. For this year’s pledge I decided not to follow the typical pledge of wearing x number of me mades (primarily because I almost exclusively wear me mades at this point) but to pledge to only wear me mades that I already had in my closet. This way I hopped to ‘re discover’ some long lost/forgotten me mades, discover which patterns are my constant go toos, and begin to let go of pieces that I no longer wear.
In total for the month I was able to capture 23 different outfits, all documented on my Instagram account @beccamadethat. There were a number of missing days due to a really bad head cold and a few migraines, which made me realize that I am seriously lacking in the ‘comfy clothes to wear around the house’ department when it comes to me mades. I have a few threadbare sets of pjs for sick or migraine-y days but they are in serious need of replacement so I’ll be adding some lounge wear to my list of things to make this year!
In terms of the most worn patterns this would hands down go to ginger jeans and kalle shirtdress shirts (both Closet Case patterns!) I really, REALLy, need to do a round up post of all my ginger jeans, including some of my earlier iterations that I don’t really wear anymore…my jeans making skills have really levelled up over the years ;) Since I work in a lab environment I need long pants to wear on a daily basis and for this reason I LOVE my collection of mid rise ginger jeans. They are easily dressed up with the simple addition of a blazer for more ‘business casual’ events and work equally well for a night out. And with a good pair of ginger jeans the easiest paring (in my opinion) is an equally good Kalle shirtdress, I love the way this pattern fits as well as the endless iterations of lengths, collars, plackets, and drapes/resulting shapes depending on fabric choices. Since I wore/wear this combo so much I decided to give it it’s own hashtag, #KalleShirtDressGingerJeans lol
Along with the Kalle shirtdress shirts I also often wear my scout tees. Such a simple but versatile pattern! I think I have around 4 or 5 in my closet right now but since they are so easy to whip up, require so little fabric, and are so easy to style I can see a few more in my near future!
Some surprise wins for this month were my matcha tops as well as my knitted Bolan tee! I’ve made around 3 matcha tops at this point, with the two I reach for the most being the sleeveless versions. I like how the collar fits and looks, although I realized this month how hard they are to photograph... the oversized nature of the shirt can lead to very ‘boxy’ looking photos if you aren’t moving around during the photo process. I’m toying with the idea of modifying the pattern to only have gathers at the front of the shirt to reduce some of the volume at the back so we’ll see if that works! The other ‘surprise win’, like I mentioned, would be my Bolan tee which was my last blog post. I was really happily surprised how well this knitted tee worked with my ogden tank top and it has really given new life to a me made that I was completely unsure if I would ever really wear.
Well that about wraps my review or this year’s Me Made May! I’ve gotten so many fresh ideas from watching the #MeMadeMay2019 hashtag, so many new sewing and knitting plans floating around in my brain for the summer! With that comes some closet cleaning, time to let go of some of my early makes that I don’t wear anymore, any suggestions on the best way to donate me mades?
